Anatomy of the Brain
The human brain is a three-pound organ and is located within the skull. It is the most complex and one of the largest organs in the human body and plays a major role in almost all body functions. It controls speech, memory, thoughts, leg and arm movements, as well as the function of several organs within the body. It also regulates the secretion of hormones and breathing and heart rates.
Conditions
Brain Tumor
A brain tumor is the growth of abnormal cells in the brain. When most normal cells grow old or get damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes, this process goes wrong.
Cerebrovascular Disease
Cerebrovascular disease is a condition that affects the flow of blood to the brain. It is characterized by ischemia (lack of oxygen) or bleeding in an area of the brain and involves one or more cerebral (of the brain) blood vessels.
Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. It may include convulsions, staring spells, confusion, and loss of consciousness caused due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak
Cerebrospinal fluid is a watery fluid that circulates around the brain and spinal cord. It is usually contained by the meningeal layers, which encase the brain and spinal cord.
Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in and around the brain, which causes swelling of the brain and affects normal brain function.
Procedures
Cerebrovascular (Neurovascular) Surgery
Cerebrovascular surgery also called neurovascular surgery, involves the surgical repair of the blood vessels that supply oxygen to your brain. It is performed for the treatment of various neurovascular conditions in which part of your brain is affected due to restricted blood flow or bleeding.
Brain Tumor Surgery
Surgery is usually the preferred treatment when a patient is diagnosed with a brain tumor. It involves the surgical removal of the tumor from the brain either completely or partially.
Epilepsy Surgery
Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain characterized by recurrent seizures which are episodes of involuntary shaking, produced as a result of abnormal electrical brain activity.
Microvascular Decompression (MVD) for Trigeminal Neuralgia
Microvascular Decompression (MVD) is a surgical procedure aimed at relieving the debilitating pain caused by Trigeminal Neuralgia. This is a very painful condition that may be caused by a blood vessel compressing the trigeminal nerve. MVD involves relocating or removing blood vessels that are in contact with the trigeminal root, aiming to stop the nerve from malfunctioning.
Craniotomy
A craniotomy is a surgical procedure in which a section of the skull bone is removed to access the brain underneath in order to treat various conditions affecting the brain.
